Suitland Fireside

Saturday October 15th at the Suitland stake center (5300 Auth Rd., Suitland, MD) from 9am – 12:30pm will be the annual AMCAP (Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists)  Annual Conference.  This conference is open to all interested church members.   Following the AMCAP conference there will be a fireside presented by Roger Stark, the author of the book The Waterfall Concept: a blueprint to addiction recovery. This book was recommended to you some time ago and is an excellent read for all involved in ARP.  Whether you come for both the AMCAP conference and the Addiction fireside, or just one or the other, I hope you’ll see me and say “hi” and enjoy the day learning and feeling the spirit of ARP.  Thanks, Kyle.

Here is the information regarding this special event:

Addiction: What it is and What it isn’t.

Addiction Recovery Fireside, 1-4 pm, Oct 15,  Suitland Stake Center

Members of AA call alcoholism a “cunning and baffling” disease.  Indeed, all addictions are.  Recovery begins with understanding.  Not only understanding how the addiction developed, but understanding where the recovery highway actually goes.  Learning how to heal or how to help are often the most difficult parts the struggle.  The Savior provides the healing, getting ourselves to him while encumbered by our addictive behaviors is the challenge.

Designed for those struggling with addiction in the LDS community and their families and helpers. Some of the discussion points are:

  • Education – Understanding the disease
  • Planning — Charting the Recovery Path
  • Change — How compulsions are extinguished
  • Helpers — The helpers role
  • The Rules — The rules that lead to recovery
  • Benchmarks — How we measure success
  • 12 Step Work – The keys to spiritual healing
  • Skill Building — Raising the ability to change
  • Tool Gathering – Acquiring the tools of recovery
  • Usual Suspects — These guarantee recovery failure

Who would benefit from attending:  Individuals struggling with addiction, family members, helpers, church leaders, missionaries, and treatment providers.

Fireside lead by Roger Stark, addiction counselor and author of The Waterfall Concept; A blueprint for addiction recovery.
